Description
The brewhouse and laundry block, located on the east side of the north courtyard of Ripley Castle, is likely from the late 18th century and was built for Sir John Ingilby. It is constructed of coursed squared gritstone and features a graduated stone slate roof. The building is two stories tall with three bays, flanked by lower single-storey wings that each have two bays. Throughout the structure, there are plain flush sills and lintels.
The central laundry block has double board doors in the middle, flanked by 16-pane sash windows, with three 4-pane fixed windows on the first floor. The left wing features a central board door with 2-light casement windows on either side, while the right wing has a similar arrangement but with 16-pane sashes. The central block is topped with a pyramid roof that has a louvred ventilator and banded stacks on either side, while the side wings have hipped roofs.
Inside, the central block is open to the roof and contains a large brick-built boiler and coppers against the left-hand wall, along with a stone bench or shelf supported by bricks on the right-hand wall.
