Description
The sundial located in the center of the east courtyard at Ripley Castle dates from the late 18th century or early 19th century. It is made of pale gritstone and features a two-tier circular base topped by a vase baluster with diagonal fluting, standing approximately 1.5 meters high. The sundial has a marble capstone with a bronze gnomon inscribed with the words "Tho Wright." Originally, the sundial was positioned in the middle of a circular lawn, with the carriage drive encircling the courtyard. A painting of the old house created around 1780 depicts a similar, albeit more slender, sundial.
