Description
Church View and Garden Cottage is a pair of cottages, likely built in the early 19th century, and part of the estate village of Sir William Amcotts Ingilby. They are constructed from coursed squared gritstone and have a Westmorland slate roof. The cottages are two storeys high and feature a mirrored design with one bay each, extending two bays deep, in a Gothick style.
The central entrance consists of paired doors adorned with Y-tracery decoration, set within four-centred arched surrounds that are topped by a continuous square hoodmould. On either side of the doors, there are flat-headed chamfered mullion windows, each with three four-centred arched lights, also under hoodmoulds, located on both the ground and first floors. A projecting band runs along the first floor, and the hipped roof has deep eaves. The end stacks are corniced and feature three attached octagonal flues on both sides.
Sir William rebuilt Ripley village in a style reminiscent of the Castle, which was restored by his father, Sir John, who died in 1815. The three-light windows of these cottages are identical to those found in the tower, and this pair is similar to the estate cottages located on the Main Street.
