RIPLEY MAIN STREET (west side) Drinking Fountain with statue (formerly listed as water fountain with carved boat)

Drinking fountain. 1907, using probably C18 statue. Gritstone plinth, fossiliferous limestone statue. The plinth is approximately 2 metres long and 1 metre wide, the plinth and statue approximately 2 metres high; the narrower side facing towards the street having a central recessed panel with the inscription: "A Gift to Ripley / from / The Hon Alicia Margaret / Dame Ingilby / 1907". The inscription is flanked by taps and cuphooks. The statue is of a boar. Dame Alicia was the wife of Sir Henry Day Ingilby (d1911); her gift was timely as a few years later the 3 inns in the village were closed by Sir Henry's brother, William.
