Description
The School House is a house dating from around 1830, likely part of the estate village for Sir William Amcotts Ingilby. It is constructed of coursed squared gritstone and has a grey slate roof. The building is two storeys high and features three bays, with the central bay slightly projecting forward. This central bay contains a deeply recessed three-panel door, which has interlaced glazing bars and a pointed overlight set in a moulded surround with a crocketted ogee door-head.
The windows are flat-headed and chamfered, with two 4-centred arched lights that hold 8-pane casements, each with hoodmoulds above. The corners of the building are accentuated by pilaster strips. There is a moulded eaves cornice and a low blocking course, while the hipped roof is topped with corniced stacks flanking the ridge.
This house shares a similar style with Church View in the Market Place and Town Hall Cottages, but it boasts more architectural features, such as the pilaster strips and the crocketted door-head. These elements connect it to the Castle and the Church, reflecting the status of the schoolmaster within the village community.
