Description
A terrace of four cottages dating from the early to mid-19th century, forming part of the estate village created for Sir William Amcotts Ingilby. The cottages are constructed of coursed squared gritstone with a grey slate roof. They are two storeys high and four bays wide; the first three bays have matching facades, while the fourth is a mirrored design. The architectural style is Gothick.
A two-step stone approach leads to a two-panel door set within a four-centred arched surround with applied Y-tracery, topped by a square hoodmould that extends to the sides. To the right of the door is a mullion window with three four-centred arched lights, featuring small rectangular leaded panes. The first floor has similar windows, and a decorative band runs along this level. Deep eaves extend under the hips roof, which has three ridge stacks with paired octagonal corniced flues located centrally and at each end of the terrace. The right return side displays a two-light window at first-floor, mirroring the design of the front. An eaves band is also present.
The cottages were built as part of Sir William’s rebuilding of Ripley village, following a similar style to that used by his father, Sir John, at the Castle. The window design replicates that of the tower, and shares a similar design with the Church View and Garden Cottage pair.
