Description

A terrace of a house and three cottages, dating from the early to mid-19th century. They form part of the estate village created for Sir William Amcotts Ingilby. The cottages are constructed of coursed squared gritstone with a grey slate roof. The terrace is two storeys high and five bays wide, with a double-fronted house on the left and three single-bay cottages in the centre and to the right. The architectural style is Tudor-Gothic. There are four equally spaced three-panel doors set within moulded surrounds with ogee heads, all set under hoodmoulds. The windows are chamfered with paired pointed-arched lights, hoodmoulds, and lead cames, on both floors, with the ground-floor windows alternating with the doors. Five gables extend from the roofline, each containing cruciform recesses, ashlar copings, and four crenellated stacks along the ridge, positioned between the gables. The left return has a door on the right side and a gabled facade mirroring the main frontage. Sir William rebuilt Ripley village in a style similar to his father’s work at the nearby castle. The cruciform recesses are also a copy of the north range of the castle courtyard. The ogee door-heads and two-light windows are found in the church, specifically the south aisle screen and the tower. The terrace is architecturally similar to South View.
