Description
Ripley School is a single-storey building constructed in 1830, with an added porch, located on the west side of Main Street in Ripley. It is part of the estate village of Sir William Amcotts Ingilby and is built from coursed squared gritstone with a grey slate roof. The building features a Gothick style with a central entrance in a projecting porch. On either side of the entrance are tall, flat-headed chamfered windows, each with two 4-centred arched lights and hoodmoulds, and leaded lights similar to those found at Town Hall Cottages.
A central limestone plaque set into an oval frame below the projecting eaves band bears the inscription: "This school was Built by / MARY INGILBY in ye year 1702 / and indowed with part of the fortune of KATHERINE INGILBY / Being ye two youngest Daugh / ters of Sr WILLIAM INGILBY / of Ripley in Ye County of York / Barronett / Rebuilt AD 1830". The building has a hipped roof. On the right side, there are two 16-pane sash windows in plain surrounds, with raised lintels, and an additional 8-pane window inserted above. An added bay to the right is not of special interest. The style of the windows is inspired by the church tower and is similar to that of the School House and Town Hall Cottages.
