Description
South Lodges is a lodge that has been converted into a house. It dates from the mid-18th century and features 19th-century extensions and 20th-century alterations. The building is constructed of brick with ashlar dressings and has Westmorland slate roofs.
The original lodge is a central, two-storey structure with one bay, flanked by added screen walls. The central lodge has an ashlar plinth and a two-storey recessed round-arched panel, which is now rendered. Each floor features a double-chamfered two-light mullion window, with a sill band within the panel on the ground floor and a sill band that continues outside the panel on the first floor. There is an ashlar modillion cornice and a hipped roof with a central stack.
On the right side, the screen wall includes a two-light casement window, with ashlar coping that sweeps down to a narrow gateway, terminating in a square brick pier. On the left side, the screen wall has a double-chamfered two-light mullion window and ashlar coping. The right return of the lodge features a blind oculus on the first floor. There is a 20th-century rear extension to the left. The lodge forms a symmetrical composition with the north lodge.
