Description
No. 48 High Street is a shop with a dwelling above, dating from the late 18th century. It is constructed of brick in Flemish bond and has a Westmorland slate roof. The building stands three storeys high and features three first-floor windows. The entrance has central glazed double doors with wooden glazing bars arranged in a geometric pattern, topped by a fanlight.
The wooden doorcase is particularly notable, consisting of flanking fluted columns and paired brackets that support an entablature, which extends over 20-pane bow windows held up by iron grilles. There are segmental fanlights above the bow windows. On the first and second floors, the central sash window has glazing bars and is flanked by 16-pane recessed sashes. The windows have projecting sills and channelled wedge lintels. Additionally, there is a cast lead rainwater head and downpipe on the left, along with gutter brackets and brick-end stacks.
