Description
Riccall War Memorial is a First World War memorial built in 1921, with additions for the Second World War and the 21st century. It is situated at the entrance to the churchyard, northeast of the Grade I-listed Church of St Mary.
The memorial is made of Portland stone and features a tall, tapering, fluted pillar topped with a decorative capital and a moulded band beneath. Each of the four faces at the base of the pillar has a relief-carved wreath, and above this are two carved decorative bands. The fluting of the pillar also includes carved decoration. The pillar stands on a narrow square pedestal that rises from a tapering, four-sided plinth, which has a moulded foot and is set atop a narrow, single-step chamfered base.
An inscription wraps around the pedestal in relief lettering, starting on the northeast face and reading, "FOR GOD/ KING/ AND/ COUNTRY." The main inscription is located on the northeast face of the plinth and states, "TO THE GLORY OF GOD/ AND IN UNDYING MEMORY/ OF THE MEN FROM RICCALL/ WHO FELL IN THE GREAT WAR/ 1914-1918./ 'GREATER LOVE HATH NO MAN/ THAN THIS THAT A MAN LAY/ DOWN HIS LIFE FOR HIS FRIENDS'." Below this is a later inscription added in the 21st century for the centenary of the First World War, which reads, "TO MARK THE CENTENARY/ OF THE GREAT WAR/ 1914-1918/ NEVER FORGOTTEN." The names of the 20 men who died in the conflict are inscribed on the southeast and northwest faces of the plinth, with the lettering incised and painted black.
On the southwest face of the plinth, there is a dedication to the Second World War, also in incised lettering and painted black, listing the years 1939-1945 and noting five names.
