Description
Huggate War Memorial is a First World War memorial built in 1921 by Pate Stonemasons, with an addition for the Second World War. It is located in the churchyard of the listed Grade I Church of St Mary. The memorial is made of Portland stone and takes the form of an ashlar obelisk that rises from a pedestal on a square base. The obelisk features a pyramidal top and has an astragal moulding one third of the way up its shaft. The pedestal has a moulded top with plain panels, set on a chamfered plinth that rests on a single-stepped base. The front (west) panel of the pedestal has an incised inscription in painted black letters that reads: IN GRATEFUL/ REMEMBRANCE OF/ THE BRAVE MEN/ WHOSE NAMES ARE/ HEREBY INSCRIBED/ AND WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES/ FOR THEIR COUNTRY/ IN THE GREAT WAR/ 1914 – 1919, listing the names of the nine First World War Fallen on the north and south panels. The west face of the plinth is inscribed: ERECTED BY/ THE PARSHIONERS, while the south face is inscribed with the years 1939-1945 and the name of a single serviceman who was killed during the Second World War.
