Description

This wall, dating from around 1760, is attached to the south of the west range of Plompton Hall Stables and is likely part of a stable scheme designed by John Carr for Daniel Lascelles. Constructed from ashlar, the wall stands approximately 2.5 metres high and stretches about 30 metres long. It features a slight plinth, a pier at the north end, and six plain pilasters. The pier has a deep cornice, although the ball finial is missing, and the wall is topped with flat coping. To the right of the pier, there is a doorway with a keyed lintel. A section of the wall on the southern end has been removed to make way for the drive to Plompton Hall. A corresponding section of walling to the north of the west range of the stables is listed separately. The remaining sections of the wall indicate that the main approach to the stables from the west was flanked by high walls with end piers, which likely had ball finials above the pilasters.
