Description
The wall between Plompton Hall stables and the farmhouse dates from around 1760 and is likely part of a stable scheme designed by John Carr for Daniel Lascelles. It is constructed of ashlar and stands approximately 2.5 metres high and 30 metres long. The wall features a slight plinth, a pier at the north end, and six plain pilasters. It has a deep cornice and a ball finial on the pier, with flat coping along the top. To the right of the pier, there is a doorway with a plank door and a keyed lintel. The southern section of the wall has been broken through to allow access for farm machinery to the west end of the stable-block barn. The pier at the south end of the wall was previously listed separately. A corresponding section of wall at the south end of the west range of Plompton Hall stables is also listed separately. The remaining lengths of the wall indicate that the main approach to the stables from the west was flanked by high walls with piers and likely ball finials above the pilasters.
