Description

CHURCH FENTON CHURCH STREET SE 53 NW (east side) 4/7 The Croft 26.7.79 GV II House. Probably C16 or earlier with later additions and alterations including probable C17 range and C20 extension to rear. Timber framed, now rendered with stone slate and pantile roofs. Main block of 2 storeys and 3 unequal bays probably double aisled originally with outshut to rear and with added range at right angles probably replacing earlier wing, set slightly back to right. Off- centre entrance a C20 part-glazed door. C20 casement windows throughout. Hipped roof to added range with pent-roofed adjunct at join. End stacks. Catslide roof to rear extension. Interior: substantial timber frame exposed with massive timbers, jowled posts with straight braces and wall studding. Some tension braces. Aisle plate has short section of filleted ovolo and hollow chamfer moulding, cut off at later extension. Common rafter roof, showing mortices for original collars with kerb principals with clasped and trenched purlins. Cambered central tie beam shows mortices suggesting possible former crown post with side braces. Smoke blackening. Pigeon nesting boxes to roof of later range.
