Description
The Royal Hotel, built in the mid-19th century by George Hudson, known as the "Railway King," is located on East Parade. The building features two sections on its East Parade elevation, which is rendered and topped with a Welsh slate roof. The left section has a mansard roof with dormers and includes 12 double-hung sash windows with glazing bars. The right section rises to four storeys and has a hipped slate roof, with an attic storey above a heavy cornice. This section has 11 windows arranged in a pattern of 2:3:1:3:2, with the centre and quoin sections projecting slightly, the centre adorned with two finials.
The ground floor showcases a glazed canopy over the main entrance, which features glass doors and an ornamental fanlight, accessed by six steps. There is one double door and three blocked doors, all topped with cornices on consoles. Additionally, there is a late 19th-century glazed canopy above ironwork in a 'Chinese' design. The north terrace elevation mirrors the main façade, also featuring a mansard roof. The Royal Hotel, along with the Kirby Hotel and the railings to both hotels, forms a cohesive group.
