Description

Hunton House is a pair of houses dating from the mid-to-late 18th century, with alterations made in the early-to-mid 19th century. It is accompanied by a garden wall and railings from the same period. The houses are constructed of coursed sandstone rubble, with a concrete interlocking tile roof and brick end stacks.

The houses have an L-shaped plan, standing three storeys high plus a basement, with a two-by-three-bay front elevation and a rear range to the left. The window and door openings have flat arches. A 20th-century gabled porch with a part-glazed door has been added to the third bay. The ground and first floors have sash windows with glazing bars, while the second floor has side-sliding sash windows. Shaped kneelers are located to the left and between the second and third bays, with ashlar copings at the ends and between these bays.

In front of the house, a rounded garden wall retains the garden, featuring an ashlar coping and central gate piers. Wrought-iron railings, topped with cast-iron finials in the form of fleurs-des-lis and urn finials mounted on bulbous standards, run along the wall. A doorway to the left provides access to stabling situated below the garden. The rear elevation has a staircase window with radial glazing bars within a voussoired round arch.

The interior features six-panelled doors, window shutters, and a turned baluster staircase. The original sash windows with glazing bars were restored shortly before a resurvey, replacing large 20th-century casement windows.
