Description
Nos. 197 and 199 Hookstone Chase are a pair of workers' houses built in 1903, designed by Parker & Unwin. They are constructed of red brick with plain tile roofs and tall brick chimneys. The houses are two stories high and feature four windows in total. The street front presents a symmetrical pair of semi-detached cottages, each with two three-light glazing bar casements that have segment brick heads, flanked by small square windows. On either side, there are projecting square bay windows with doorways beyond, all under a continuous half-hipped catslide roof. Each bay window contains a four-light casement with two-light side windows. Above, there is a central gable with two three-light glazing bar casements, flanked by single hipped dormer windows, each featuring a similar three-light window. These houses were part of a larger project for workers' cottages, but they are the only two that were constructed. The design was showcased at the Northern Arts Workers Guild in Manchester in 1903.
