Description
The Salon is a tollhouse that has been converted into a hairdressing salon. It dates from the late 18th century and has undergone some alterations since its original construction. The building is made of hammered sandstone and features a pantile roof. It has a central-entry plan with a single storey and a three-bay front. The entrance consists of a four-panel door beneath a radial fanlight, flanked by tall round-arched sash windows with radial-glazed heads. All openings are adorned with keyed archivolts. The building has coped gables and plain kneelers, and there is a stack at the right end. The tollhouse was located on the Whitby to Saltersgate turnpike, which opened in 1760, and it is noted for its historic interest.
