Description

The building at 2 Coach Road is a railway station and station house, dating to 1846. It was designed by G.T. Andrews, the architect for the York and North Midland Railway Company. The building is constructed of hammered sandstone with sandstone quoins and dressings, and has slate roofs. It is L-shaped and incorporates an outshut.

The main front is two storeys high and has three bays, with the centre bay gabled and projecting. It features Tudor-arched board doors within chamfered openings in the centre bay and to the right. Mullioned ground floor windows are present; the window to the left has three shouldered lights, while the window to the right has two. The first floor also has mullioned windows, with two square-headed lights in each. All openings are quoined, and the central ground floor and first floor openings are topped with pointed relieving arches. The roof has overhanging eaves and a bargeboarded gable with a finial. Triple stacks rise from the base of the roof at the rear.

The right return features a one-storey, five-bay range set to the right of the two-storey section. The gable wall of the main front has a four-light canted bay window on the ground floor, with shouldered lights and a half-hexagonal hipped roof with embattled eaves. A station clock is located to the left. Above, a two-light mullioned window sits beneath a relieving arch on the first floor. The gable end terminates with carved bargeboards and a finial. The one-storey range has two chamfered Tudor-arched doorways with board doors at the right end. A similar opening is located to the left of centre, containing a half-glazed door and flanked by three-light mullioned windows with shouldered heads. Doors are fitted with wrought iron strap hinges.
