RIPLEY RIPLEY PARK Deer shed approximately 400 metres west of Ripley Lake outlet

GV II

Deer shed. Dated 1852. For Mary Ann Ingilby. Coursed squared gritstone, pantile roof. A low single-storey building with straight sides to west, south and east and the northern wall built out as a 4-sided bay, overall size approximately 10 x 20 metres. A single opening of full height at the south end and 2 paired full-height openings on the east side with ashlar pillars. Hipped roof. Interior: a spine wall of brick with a stone buttress at each end has the remains of mangers on each side and supports the wooden hay loft and roof structure; it does not meet the end walls of the building but leaves a 3 metre passage all round. The south buttress of this wall has the inscription "MARY ANN INGILBY / October 1852". Mary Ann Clementson married Sir William Amcotts Ingilby in 1843 and she initiated the landscaping of the grounds of Ripley Castle in 1843-44, creating the extensive deer park to the west of the lake. See North Yorkshire Historic Gardens Register - Ripley Castle, Grade II.
