Description
The deer shed, located approximately 400 metres west of the outlet of Ripley Lake, was built in 1852 for Mary Ann Ingilby. It is constructed of coursed squared gritstone and has a pantile roof. This low single-storey building features straight sides on the west, south, and east, with the northern wall extending out as a four-sided bay, measuring approximately 10 by 20 metres. There is a single full-height opening at the south end and two paired full-height openings on the east side, supported by ashlar pillars. The roof is hipped.
Inside, there is a brick spine wall with a stone buttress at each end, which contains remnants of mangers on both sides and supports the wooden hay loft and roof structure. The wall does not reach the end walls of the building, leaving a 3-metre passage all around. The south buttress of this wall bears the inscription "MARY ANN INGILBY / October 1852." Mary Ann Clementson married Sir William Amcotts Ingilby in 1843 and was responsible for landscaping the grounds of Ripley Castle between 1843 and 1844, which included the creation of the extensive deer park to the west of the lake.
