Description
The Church of Saint Lawrence is a Grade II* listed building dating from the mid to late 18th century. It is constructed of coursed gritstone rubble and features a Westmorland slate roof. The church has a three-bay nave and a west bell-cote, with a north transept that includes a vestry and a shallow east projection. On the south side, there is a central six-panel double door with chamfered jambs, situated beneath a round-arched window adorned with Gothick tracery. Flanking this are additional Gothick windows featuring Y tracery. Below the eaves, there is a sundial with the inscription: '1696 Mr. A. SMITH R.W R.L'. The gable copings are lead-covered.
The rear (north) side showcases a projecting north transept made of well-dressed stone. The west end features a bell-cote supported by a projecting shouldered buttress, which includes a central studded board door and stone steps, possibly serving as a mounting block, to the left. The east window in the narrow gabled projection has two trefoil-headed lights and a quatrefoil.
Inside, there is a reduced pointed arch leading to the vestry, and the shallow sanctuary area is paved with marble and stone slabs. The vaulted ceiling is decorated with moulded plaster ribs. To the right of the entrance, there is a three-decker pulpit with a sounding board and original candlesticks. The church also features a low altar rail with turned balusters and box pews throughout the body of the church, with an organ inserted across the west doorway.
