Description
The garden pavilion, located approximately 50 metres southwest of Welburn Hall, dates from the late 17th century and features a 19th-century exterior staircase. It is constructed from sandstone with rusticated ashlar quoins and has a slate roof. The pavilion is square in shape and two stories high. The upper storey has a half-glazed and panelled door, which is accessed by a later staircase. This door is set in a frame with quoined jambs and a blank cartouche above. The lower storey has a 19th-century plank floor with strap hinges, situated under a flat-headed rusticated lintel that also features a blank cartouche and a dropped keystone. All windows are fitted with plate-glass lower sashes and 12-pane sashes above. A moulded band runs at first floor level, and the tall, swept, pyramidal roof is topped with a cyma recta cornice. Inside, the upper room retains a 17th-century decorated ceiling, which includes a mythological figurative painting surrounded by a moulded plaster garland of fruit and flowers, with winged cherub heads in the corners. The lower room features tongue-stopped chamfered beams.
