Description

The Ashfield Cottages are a pair of cottages dated 1635, with alterations made in the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries. They are built of rendered stone with painted stone dressings and have a stone slate roof. The cottages are two storeys and four bays. Number 6 has a central entrance with a chamfered surround and a decorated lintel displaying the date and initials A/M O; the entrance has a 20th-century door. To the left of this entrance on the ground floor is a three-light chamfered window featuring recessed flat-faced mullions. To the right is a similar two-light window, both fitted with 20th-century casements and fixed lights. The upper floor of Number 6 has three 19th-century sash windows. Number 7 has a right-hand entrance with a plain surround and a 20th-century plank door. A chamfered three-light window with recessed flat-faced mullions is on the ground floor to the left of the entrance; a similar window sits on the upper floor, both with 20th-century casements. The cottages have three ridge stacks. The group value lies in their historical interest and well-preserved character.
