Description

The pair of cottages at Nos 4 and 5 Ashfield Cottages, in High Bentham, originally served as a barn to the right of No 6. They date to the 17th century, with alterations made in the 19th century. The construction is of slobbered rubble, partially rendered, with stone dressings and a tile roof. Two brick ridge stacks are present. The cottages are two storeys high and two bays wide. The left-hand entrance has a chamfered surround and a massive lintel, while the right-hand entrance features a moulded surround and a decorated lintel, both with 20th-century glazed doors. Each floor has two windows, each with a plain surround and sash windows. At No 5, the 19th-century rendering has been removed, revealing part of a blocked central waggon entrance.
