Description

Byards Lodge and Byards Cottage comprise a large house, now divided into two separate dwellings, dating from the late 18th century to the early 19th century. The construction uses dressed limestone with a slate roof.

Byards Lodge (originally No. 3) is a two-storey, three-bay main block, with single-storey, one-bay wings flanking it. The central entrance features a six-panel double door with a fanlight, and is flanked by Tuscan columns supporting a triangular pediment. Four-pane sash windows with flat arches are present throughout. The building has a wooden dentilled eaves cornice and end stacks to the two-storey block. The wings are topped with coping stones and ball finials. An attic window with interlaced glazing bars is positioned on the left return of the central block.

The left return, now Byards Cottage, features a single-storey, one-bay wing projecting from the right side of the main range. A two-storey, two-bay extension to the left was likely originally used as a service area. The central bay of this section has a semicircular plan on both the ground and first floors. Modern doors are present in the left and right bays. A sixteen-pane sash window is located to the right of the left door, and sixteen- and four-pane sashes are situated above. The central bay has sash windows with glazing bars and margin lights. The building has plain sills and lintels. The roof slopes downwards to the left, with a stack at eaves, while the right side has a separate stack. A conical roof covers the central, semicircular bay.
