Description

1 East Sandgate is a building dating from 1605, which now includes two former separate cottages, Nos 2 and 3. The entire structure is from the 16th or 17th century but was refaced in the 18th and 19th centuries. It has two storeys, with a front made of stuccoed stone rubble and timber framing, topped by a steep gable end roof covered in pantiles. The windows are arranged irregularly, featuring three-light Yorkshire casements on the left side of both floors, a small central double window framed by Doric pilasters, and a passage entry on the right with an early 19th-century flush framed glazing bar sash window above. The door in the passage has six fielded panels and is framed by an architrave. Timber framing is visible at the rear above the passageway. The rear wing is made of stone rubble with a brick gable. Inside, the lobby features 17th-century panelling, and there are some exposed painted beams in the front room on the ground floor. The two cottages at the north end of the front were likely created in the late 18th or early 19th century, with stucco facades and steep gable end roofs covered in slate. Each cottage has one window, with large recessed early 19th-century thin glazing bar sashes on the first floor and two-light Yorkshire casements on the ground floor. The doors are plain, with one featuring four moulded panels. No 1 East Sandgate forms a group with No 15 Sanside.
