Description

Carleton Mills is a cotton mill dating to 1861, as indicated by the date above the entrance. The building is constructed of dressed stone with a slate roof. It is three storeys high and features lintel bands and a dentil cornice. The windows have plain stone surrounds and glazing bars. Above the round-headed, rusticated doorway is a tall tower with two cornices, pilaster strips, and a parapet. The top storey of the tower has wide, elliptical-headed windows with blocking to the architrave, and is crowned by railings and a truncated pyramidal roof. A stone chimney is located at the western end. The building is listed for its architectural features and its contribution to the wider group value of the area.
