Description

An inscription set into the wall immediately east of the lych gate to the Church of St Mary dates from the early 16th century. It features two worked stones with raised Gothic lettering, which is partly legible and reads: "Anthonie Clyff(ord)...". This inscription commemorates the building of the tower of the previous church that preceded the current Church of St Mary. The Cliffords acquired the manor of Carleton in 1504. The inscription is listed for its group value only.
