Description
The war memorial, built around 1920, features a sandstone ashlar memorial cross and a rusticated sandstone screen wall. The cross is hexagonal in shape and is set within a half-hexagonal screen wall. It stands on a tall tapering shaft with a broach-stopped foot and base, and is placed diagonally on a high stepped pedestal. Each face of the plinth is inscribed with one of six virtues: Justice, Mercy, Obedience, Sacrifice, Courage, and Patience. The pedestal has a moulded top and is stepped up on alternate faces, which are adorned with panels carved with badges that include an anchor, the RAF cipher, and a sword. The screen wall features a memorial panel for the First World War in the center and a panel for the Second World War to the right. The wall is topped with coping and has carved heraldic lions couchant at each end.
