Description

This is a substantial, imposing Palladian house, dating from the mid-18th century. It comprises two dwellings, known as Handyside House and Handyside Cottage, and is located on the west side of Stokesley West Green. The central block is constructed of red brick in a header bond pattern, while the side wings utilize a Flemish bond. The roofs are pantiled, with the central block featuring a hipped design and swept surfaces. The eaves are accentuated by wooden brackets. Stone dressings include a plinth, a horizontal band, alternating quoins, and a bracketed eaves cornice situated below the wooden one.

The house presents a symmetrical facade, with a tall, three-window central two-storey block flanked by one-and-a-half-storey side wings. The windows are sash windows with glazing bars set within wooden architraves. The ground floor central window is distinguished by a stone architrave ornamented with a pulvinated frieze. Each wing features a six-panel door, topped with a radial fanlight, contained within a stone round-headed architrave and key. A tall window sits beneath a shorter upper window in each wing, with the glazing bars of the window in No. 62 having been altered. Chimneys are positioned at the rear of the wings.
