Description
The Victoria Spa Well House, located at the rear of No. 4 Broomfield Terrace in Whitby, is a spa well house built in 1860 for Mr. John Stevenson, a local druggist and veterinary surgeon. It is constructed of red brick and features a slate roof. The building has a single-storey, circular plan topped with a steep conical roof that includes alternating bands of different coloured slate and stone eaves. At the top, there is an octagonal cupola with a conical lead roof and a pinnacle.
The well house is attached to the rear yard wall of No. 4 Broomfield Terrace and has a single four-panel door in its rear wall. Inside, the walls are lined with white glazed tiles, and the floor is stone paved, featuring a central circular trap door that leads down to the well below via an iron ladder. There is a fixed sink with a brass tap and a marble top, set within an inlaid wooden frame supported by scrolls. Additionally, a single curved wooden bench with stencilled decoration is present. The roof is supported by 20 chamfered wooden beams, also decorated with stencilling, and is illuminated by the cupola, which has coloured glass panes.
