Description
The gatehouse to Steeton Hall, dating from the late 14th century, is constructed from magnesian limestone ashlar and rubble. It is square in plan, flanked by embattled rubble walls that are approximately four metres long and five metres high.
The gatehouse features two storeys and has a chamfered plinth. On the ground floor, there is a round-headed double-chamfered carriage arch to the right, alongside a round-headed double-chamfered pedestrian arch, with a slit vent above. A projecting chimney stack rises from the first floor on four corbels with heads, tapering to an octagonal, embattled chimney that extends above the battlement level. Above the carriage arch, there is a shouldered window set in a chamfered surround, with projecting battlements on a corbel table, along with gargoyles.
At the rear, the structure has a plinth and similar arches. To the left, there are three steps leading to a pointed doorway in a chamfered surround, with a slit vent above. To the right, eleven steps lead to a first-floor ogee-headed doorway in a chamfered surround. Above the carriage arch, there is an ogee-headed window in a chamfered surround, along with a corbel table and battlements.
Inside, the main archway features a ribbed vault with head stops, while the small arch has barrel vaulting.
