Description
Common Lane Bridge is a single-span intersector bridge built around 1839-1840 under the direction of Robert Stephenson. It is constructed of red brick with sandstone ashlar impost bands, cordons, and coping stones.
The bridge has a rectangular plan with canted flanking wing walls. It features a symmetrical single-span, segmental arched design. The brick arch rises from an ashlar impost band at each abutment. The spandrels and abutments are made of red brick, and extending from these are canted red brick wing walls topped with ashlar coping stones. These wing walls end in low square brick piers with ashlar cap stones. The brick parapet walls sit on ashlar cordons and are capped by ashlar coping stones, which also terminate in rectangular brick piers with ashlar plinths.
