Description

Nos 63 and 65 Kirkgate in Sherburn in Elmet is a farmhouse that has been converted into a house. It dates from the 16th and 17th centuries, with alterations made in the 19th and 20th centuries. The building is constructed of coursed rubble with ashlar dressings and features a pantile roof with a single gable and a single ridge brick stack.

The north front of the building has a two-storey, five-bay layout with a lobby-entry plan. The off-centre doorway has a 20th-century door and a flat hood. To the right of the doorway, there is a three-light glazing bar casement with an ashlar flat hood and the remains of a chamfered three-light mullion window, followed by a two-light glazing bar casement. To the left, there are a three-light casement and two sets of two-light 20th-century casements. Above, there are three two-light 20th-century casements, and to the right, there are two sets of two-light glazing bar casements.

Inside, the building features two large chimneys. The chimney on the east gable wall has a large inglenook fireplace with a bressummer that is now partially blocked. The central chimney has two inglenook fireplaces, with a larger one to the east that includes a bressummer and a salt cupboard. There is a stone winder staircase to the south of this chimney, which is no longer in use. The ground floor retains two complete stud partitions with chamfered beams. The cellar has stone steps that are no longer in use and includes a salting slab. The roof consists of three main trusses with passing purlins and a ridge piece.
