Description
The lychgate, attached churchyard walls, and footgate to the south of the Church of St Andrew were built in 1872 by G E Street for Sir Tatton Sykes. The lychgate features a timber-framed structure set on sandstone ashlar walls, topped with a tiled roof. The walls are rusticated with sandstone ashlar coping. The footgate includes wrought-iron work. The lychgate has an arch-braced king-post roof supported by stone walls that are approximately 1.2 metres high, and it features an arcade of six round-arched lights beneath the arch. The churchyard walls are rock-faced, standing approximately 0.9 to 1.2 metres high, and they step to follow the sloping ground, ending in gabled coping. The footgate is marked by square-section piers with gabled, roll-moulded caps that have incised crosses. It also has a round-arched overthrow with a lamp bracket and cross finial, along with a four-panel gate, where the top panels are open and pointed.
