Description

This is a mid-18th century house, now comprising two shops at 32 and 34 Market Place, Knaresborough. The house is constructed of brick, with the elevation of number 34 rendered. It has a Westmorland slate roof. The building is three storeys high with four windows on the first floor. Modern shop doors and windows are set within 19th-century wooden pilasters and surrounds. A passageway is located to the far left. The original windows are four-pane sashes, set within stone architraves with moulded sills and keyed lintels. Horizontal bands run at the level of the first and second floors; the second-floor band is interrupted by keystones above the windows. A moulded eaves cornice tops the building, followed by a brick parapet with stone pilasters at each end and ramped stone coping. Ashlar gable copings are also present. Brick end stacks are located to the left, and a ridge stack is situated between the third and fourth windows, on the current boundary between the two properties.
