Description

The outer gatehouse to Skipton Castle, serving as the public entrance, dates from the beginning of the 14th century. It features two massive round towers that are castellated, along with two chimneys and a round stair turret. The gatehouse has segmental arched entrances and small-paned windows. The upper portion was restored in the mid-17th century and includes the Clifford motto "Desormais" in the parapet. Inside, there is a charming "grotto" made of shells in one of the rooms.
