Description
The farm buildings located approximately 2 meters north of Howe Farmhouse consist of a threshing barn and attached ranges of byres, stables, and loose boxes, along with lofts and cart and implement sheds. These structures date from the early 19th century, with some alterations and extensions made in the late 19th century. The buildings are constructed of coursed squared stone set on a brick plinth, with an extension made of red brick in English garden-wall bond. The roofs are covered in pantiles, with some areas rebuilt, and the barn features a hipped roof supported by wrought-iron corner brackets.
The barn, located to the north, is two storeys tall and has six bays. The left bay in the center has full-height double doors made of boards, which are set beneath a segmental brick arch. There is a small door in the center right bay that is now blocked. The loft openings are square pitching windows, some of which are shuttered, and have painted timber lintels. There are numerous ventilation slits located on three levels, and a brick eaves course runs along the top. At the rear, facing the foldyard, there is a full-height rebated doorway with a massive timber lintel to the right, and to the left, a stable door with a slatted overlight. The left and right returns feature board lifting doors leading to the loft.
The west range is one-and-a-half storeys tall with nine bays, although it is partly obscured by a later building. The ground floor has altered openings, while the loft has shuttered pitching windows. The east range is a single storey with nine bays. The north end of this range includes a three-bay cart shed supported by stone cylindrical piers, while the remainder was originally used as implement sheds with cast-iron column piers. The southern bay has been altered to serve as a pigsty, complete with feeding troughs, which are now blocked.
