Description
The Church of St James is a church built in 1852 by the architects Mallinson and Healey. It is constructed of sandstone ashlar with roofs made of stone slate and modern tiles. The church features a three-stage west tower that is battlemented, along with a south porch. The nave has five bays and is aisled, while the chancel consists of two bays. Inside, there is a wooden barrel vault supported by head corbels. The nave arcade is characterized by quatrefoil piers and chamfered arches. The clerestory is simple with two-light windows and decorated tracery. The east window, which has four lights, contains the monogram of William Wailes in the glass. Additionally, there are fragments of an ornate late Norman doorway, including an arch with beak-head decoration and several small panels depicting figures and foliage.
