Description
The house at Summer Hill dates from the late 18th century, with additions made in the early 19th century to its east and west sides. It is constructed of roughcast stone, with a stuccoed first floor, ashlar dressings, and a hipped slate roof. The east elevation is two storeys and three bays wide, featuring a central entrance plan. It has a band across the ground floor and a sill band to the first floor, topped by a cornice. Windows are late 19th-century casements; ground-floor windows have architraves and keystones, while those on the first floor have half-fluted pilasters, cornices, and keystones. The entrance is marked by a Doric porch with paired columns, a triglyph frieze, an architrave, and a panelled door with overlight. Two cross-axial stacks are present. The south elevation is similar in style, with three bays and an added bay to each end and a further, lower, bay to the west. A veranda features slender cast-iron columns and glazing to its returns. A 20th-century extension to the west, originally a cottage, is not considered to be of special interest. The north elevation has a round-headed stair window above a roundel, alongside some windows with sash glazing bars. The interior includes a round entrance hall with niches and a rosette-decorated dome. This hall features a three-bay arcade and a rib vault. Early 19th-century features include fireplaces, cornices, and enriched elliptical-headed alcoves. The staircase has turned balusters and a newel. Later 19th-century panelling and an inglenook fireplace are also present.
