Description

Calthwaite Hall is an early 19th-century house constructed of grey sandstone ashlar with string courses and a parapet, set upon a chamfered plinth. It has a hipped roof covered in graduated greenslate, with candlestick chimney stacks. The main house is two storeys high and comprises three bays, with a lower, two-bay wing extending to the left. A projecting, Gothic, pointed-arched porch shelters panelled double doors flanked by pointed side lights. Casement windows, some with glazing bars, are set in chamfered surrounds beneath hoodmoulds. The right return wall features a central canted bay window with pointed Gothic windows, and flanking windows beneath hoodmoulds. A later extension incorporates two-light windows under hoodmoulds. The house was advertised for sale in the Carlisle Journal on 9 February 1849.
