Description
The former barn, located 30 metres to the southwest of Hardrigg Hall, is a building that may date back to the 16th century, with later additions and alterations. It is constructed of square, coursed rubble, and the straight joists indicate that the original structure may have had an open side facing west. The roof features stone flags on the lower courses of each pitch, with the remainder covered in slate and stone ridges.
This single-storey building has six bays, with opposed cart entrances in the third bay from the north, which are now filled in. There is a small plank door in the second bay and a large cart entrance that has been inserted in the south gable. Inside, there are five full oak-pegged cruck trusses that originally included spurs, collars, and blades lapped over saddles, with visible carpenter's marks on some. Trusses one and five have been reused, while trusses two and three are made from lighter materials and have notches cut out. Trusses one, four, and five feature additional splays. Only truss two retains its original collar intact, while the collars on trusses three and four have been cut through, truss one has a replacement collar intact, and truss five has had its collar cut through. Additionally, a corrugated iron shed has been added to the east side of the barn.
