Description
The Graving Dock in Barrow-in-Furness is a notable structure that opened on August 1, 1872. Constructed from red sandstone, it features a round-ended inlet measuring approximately 500 by 60 feet (150 by 18 meters), with its entrance located at the north-west end from the Walney Channel. The entrance has battered walls and a limestone slot designed for a caisson. The sides of the dock are tiered, with steps near the entrance and intermediate buttresses. The rounded end includes steps that cover the inlet hole, along with Roman numerals indicating the water depth. Currently, the dock is part of the Maritime Museum site, with the south-east end incorporated into the museum building. Historical engravings from 1886 depict the dock in use.
