Description
The bank barn located approximately 20 meters north of Farleton House is a Grade II listed structure, likely built in the 18th century with early 19th-century additions to the east and west, as well as a small extension to the north. The barn features a central section made of mixed rubble brought to courses, while the remainder is constructed from roughly-squared coursed limestone with three levels of protruding stones. It has a graduated greenslate roof and a stone ridge, forming an L-shaped plan with the extension to the north.
On the south side, there are ten doors, mostly boarded, along with one window at ground level. Most openings are topped with roughly-cut monolithic limestone lintels. Above, there are two winnowing doors and a loading door, all featuring segmental heads and roughly cut voussoirs, as well as a blocked wagon door with a segmental head and voussoirs in the extension at the west end. The north side has two boarded wagon doors with ramped approaches and scattered fenestration, with all openings having segmental-arched heads and stone voussoirs, except for the eastern wagon door which has a heavy timber lintel.
There is a later off-centre gabled extension at right angles, which includes brick dove-holes flanked by small round-headed windows with cut stone voussoirs in the gable, and a hipped extension at the west end. The east gable features a blocked round-headed opening with a keyed owl-hole above. The barn has quoins, stone copings, kneelers, and ball finials on the gables. The interior could not be inspected. The barn also has landscape value, although a lean-to extension on the east side with a corrugated roof is not considered of interest.
