Description

These are a range of commercial properties dating from 1822, built on the south side of Market Square. Constructed of squared, coursed watershot rubble, they comprise three storeys and each house originally had two bays. The windows generally have sills and flush lintels. Doorways feature plain surrounds.

Number 1 has a facade to Market Square with an early 19th-century shopfront incorporating bow windows and an entablature. However, the rear elevation to Main Street has a later shopfront with flanking Doric pilasters and a cornice, along with a modern door. Sashes are present throughout.

Number 3 features an early 19th-century shopfront, bowed but with flat modern glazing. The original six-panel door retains four glazed upper panels. Sashes are present.

Number 5 has an early 19th-century shopfront with a bowed entablature, supported by reeded Doric three-quarter columns, and flat modern glazing. It features sashes and a modern door.

Number 7 boasts an early 19th-century bowed shopfront with modern glazing bars, an entablature supported by reeded Doric three-quarter columns, sashes, and a modern door.

Number 9 displays a first-floor sill band and an early 19th-century bowed shopfront with all glazing bars intact. Its entablature and reeded Doric half columns are supported on consoles. There are sashes and a modern door.

Number 13 has sashes and a six-panel door with a rectangular fanlight. A yard entrance is positioned to the right-hand side and has a segmental head.

Number 15 contains sashes with all glazing bars intact and a five-panel door with a glazed upper panel.

The properties were built in 1822 by the Earl of Lonsdale on what was formerly the garden of the Royal Hotel.
