Description
The Market Cross, located in Market Square, was built in 1905 and is designed in the Tudor Gothic style. It features an octagonal stone canopy topped with a low pyramidal slate roof. The structure has eight equal arches adorned with leaf designs in the spandrels, with four of these arches blocked by low parapets. Each pier is buttressed with two setbacks and is topped by an obelisk and ball. There are round-headed niches in each buttress, and the parapet is embattled. At the apex of the roof stands a large stone cross. Inside, there is a shallow stone rib vault supported by engaged colonnettes. An inscription in raised Gothic script on the frieze reads: "This Market Cross was presented to the town by the Rev J.W. Davies D.D. Vicar of Kirkby-Lonsdale from 1889 to 1908. 1905."
