Description

Birkrigg Park Farmhouse is a farmhouse that likely has its core dating back to 1742, with initials and a date plaque on the east gable. The building has undergone alterations in the 19th and 20th centuries. It features stone rubble walls with limestone quoins and a plinth, topped by a steeply-pitched graduated greenslate roof that has a projecting corniced stone gutter, stone copings, and kneelers, along with two end chimneys. The farmhouse is two storeys high with attics and has three windows that are 20th-century sashes set in stone surrounds. The central door is framed by a mid-19th-century limestone porch with pilasters and a flat hood supported by consoles, leading to 20th-century glazed double doors. To the left, there is a single-storey gabled extension with decorative barge boards. The east side features a gabled porch with similar decorative barge boards and a finial, along with 20th-century glazed outer doors. Inside, there is a staircase with four flights leading to the attics; the second flight is a 19th-century addition with an open moulded string and turned balusters arranged in groups of three. The other flights are from the 18th century, featuring closed strings, turned balusters, square newels, and moulded handrails. The landing has six-panelled doors from the late 18th or early 19th century, and there are small 19th-century panelled cupboards in the bedroom. Additionally, there is a 17th-century ledged and battened oak door with an arched head in a heavy oak surround on the east gable, and the windows have panelled surrounds.
