Description

The sundial located to the south of Millrigg was created in 1846 by Richard Melville of Glasgow. It features a pillar support with decorative acanthus leaves at both the base and capital. The sundial has a square, moulded abacus that holds an inset slate on top, which includes one main dial and four subsidiary dials, one in each corner. The smaller dials are labeled for morning, afternoon, evening, and night, although the evening and night dials have lost their gnomons. The main dial displays the maker's name along with a badly weathered inscription. This sundial replaced an earlier one that was given to Acorn Bank in Temple Sowerby and previously stood at Millrigg.
