Description

A terrace of eleven houses built around 1880 in Barrow in Furness. The houses are constructed of red brick with slate and composition tile roofs. They are three storeys high, with two-storey rear wings, and feature twenty-two windows to the first floor. The terrace is arranged in five reflected pairs, with a single house at the right end. A yellow brick band runs across the ground floor, and a sill band is present on the upper floors. The doorways are paired, with tall overlights and segmental arches, flanked by double sash windows with projecting sills and segmental arches; number 22 has altered ground-floor openings. First-floor windows have moulded lintels and brick dripmoulds, while the windows above the doors are coupled. A lettered panel beneath the second-floor sill band reads 'BARROW HOSPITAL SUPPORTED BY VOLUNTARY CONTRIBUTIONS'. The second-floor windows are similar, but the central couples are set in corbelled projections with hipped roofs and finials; number 10 retains four-pane sashes on both upper floors. Number 6, at the right end, has a door to the left and paired windows on the upper floors, but lacks the corbelled projection. A corbel table is present at the eaves; cast-iron ogee guttering is visible on numbers 14 and 16. Brick stacks are on the party walls, with the stack between numbers 18 and 20 retaining its original decorative top. The right end of the roof is hipped. The terrace was built as a nurses' home to serve North Lonsdale Hospital on Lonsdale Street.
